ETHIOPIAN THORACIC SOCIETY (ETS):  is a professional society in Ethiopia, established in 2014, by professionals in the field of  Pulmonary & Critical Care  Medicine  and  include physicians working in Pulmonology, Thoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Critical care, Emergency medicine ,Anesthesia, Chest imaging Radiology, Microbiology  and other interested and willing to be member of the society and support the goals. ETS has 120 full and associate members. ETS goals are to improve the quality of health care and equity of the delivery of health through improving the medical and research knowledge and skills of the fellow members and educating the public at large in chest, pulmonologists and related fields.ETS is governed by a 7 member executive committee, being led by the president of ETS. ETS has 5 sub-committees to discharge its responsibilities, namely,

                     1.    The internal Auditor.

                     2.    CPD committee, CPD committee chair, members nominated and approved by the EC.

                     3.    Editorial board members, chairman nominated and approved by the EC.

                     4.    Ethics and research committee.

                     5.    Members’ affairs committee.

With whom we work?

The society is collaborating locally and internationally with governmental and nongovernmental organization working in this field and other similar societies. It is member of Pan African Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society. It collaboratively working with American Thoracic Society in terms of fellow training and exchange program, through this process two of our previous fellow attended ATS annual conference to present their abstract through sponsorship of ATS.ETS also support to training bronchoscopy course to Global Health training of ATS scholar to complete Global pulmonary training which was done mostly online and we contribute in bronchoscopy skill training and one person from Uganda trained and qualified. Internationally our most collaborators is East African Training Initiatives which started &supported the Pulmonary &Critical Care fellowship training program in Ethiopia

what we do

ETS is actively working in the areas of  Lung Cancer,TB,DR-TB&TB/HIV, Pulmonology, Critical Care; Sleep Medicine, other infectious diseases, Pediatric allergy/immunology, thoracic surgery, behavioral science, environmental and occupational medicine, physiology, molecular biology, etc. ETS members are engaged in several research initiatives. ETS has been engaged in several activities ranging from training, training material development to advisory role to the Federal ministry of Health particularly on TB. Now ETS is capable of handling big projects and wants to engage at higher level in the field of advanced and innovative ways of TB diagnosis, quality assurance, system strengthening and TB research to achieve TB elimination in Ethiopia. Under this Lung cancer project ETS will work on TASH, Chest Unit. These will involve operational research; strengthen Cancer Register, Education and training of Clinicians on different lung cancer areas. Beside the Society will focus on Tobacco sessions and Public Educations on lung cancer using various media outlets.

Major Areas of Interest

ETS is interested in pulmonology, critical care; sleep medicine, ID, pediatric allergy /immunology, thoracic surgery, behavioral science, environmental and occupational medicine, physiology, molecular biology.. etc.:

1. Improving Health service delivery, public health and consultancies

2. Improving medical and supportive education and provision of CPD to members.

3. Improving research and its dissemination to members and Ethiopian health professionals

4. Teach and advise members’ right and ethical principles
